Strange studied art for six years in Edinburgh, under Richard Cooper. He fought with the Jacobites in the civil wars after which he escaped to France and completed his studies in Paris under engraver J.P. Le Bas. Strange returned to London in 1751, where he established himself as one of the country's pre-eminent engravers.
