Richard St John Tyrwhitt NPG P7(17)

© National Portrait Gallery, London

by Lewis Carroll

He brought his etchings for Dodgson to photograph, and often posed himself - once in Highland dress. On 22 October 1856 Dodgson 'Took Tyrwhitt's photograph, unsuccessfully, in the afternoon'; he made this portrait the following spring. Dodgson admired Tyrwhitt's verse (such as A Book of Ballads (1863), written with Thomas Lawrence) as much as Tyrwhitt appears to have admired Dodgson's photography.
