John Phillip was a Scottish painter. He was a shoemaker's son and was apprenticed to a house painter. At the same time he was taught by a local portrait painter. In 1834 he stowed away on a brig and visited the Royal Academy Schools in London. In 1836 on the strength of a history painting, he was financed by William Ramsay Maule, Lord Panmure, to leave home and attend the Royal Academy Schools.
