by Théobald Chartran ('T')
Chartran was a French academic painter who produced sixty-six caricatures for Vanity Fair. The accompanying text gave a measured verdict of Meissonier's work: 'He is rarely faithful to the sobriety of nature. He takes usually a theatrical view of his subject. Yet he is one of the noteworthy painters of this time, for he draws admirably'.
