by Sir John Everett Millais, 1st Bt
Like William Michael Rossetti, Stephens was one of the two non-artistic members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. He made a few attempts at painting between 1848 and 1850 but soon turned to writing art criticism, contributing to the PRB journal, The Germ. He had a successful career as a writer on art for most of the remainder of his life, serving as art editor on the Athenaeum for over forty years.
