Labour MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, since 1987, when she became the first black woman elected to the British Parliament. Abbott is of Jamaican heritage, born in Paddington, London, her parents immigrated to Britain in the 1950's. She has served on the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, taking a particular interest in human rights.
