Before studying for the priesthood, Remington was a school teacher and a track and field athlete. In 1900 he competed at the Summer Olympics in Paris, where he came fourth in the long jump and competed in the hurdles. After serving as a rector in Minnesota, he served as a chaplain of a base hospital during World War One.
