Art historian and mountaineer; born 12 April at Rochester, Kent. Conway developed a dual fascination with art and Alpine climbing while studying at Cambridge and wrote influential books in both fields, including The Alps from End to End, 1895, and Early Flemish Artists, 1887. In 1892 he surveyed 2000 miles of the Himalayas and climbed Pioneer Peak, 6890m, an altitude record for the time.
