After graduating from Trinity College, Hodge Mill continued to live in Cambridge, devoting himself to oriental studies. In 1817 he was ordained and became a priest the following year. In 1820, Mill was appointed the first principal of the newly founded Bishop's College, Calcutta. He assisted in the publication of works in Arabic, studied the local languages and Sanskrit, and co-operated in the work of the Sanskrit.
