In 1827, Brookfield was articled to a solicitor at Leeds, but he left this position to enter Trinity College, Cambridge, two years later. There he became the friend of Arthur Henry Hallam and Alfred Tennyson. In 1834, he became tutor to George William (later 4th Lord) Lyttelton, with whom he shared an interest in education.
