The son of Richard Beckford and nephew of William Beckford, he was born in Jamaica but studied in England, and undertook the Grand Tour after attending Oxford University. On the death of his father in 1756 he inherited four sugar plantations in Jamaica with 910 enslaved people. He and his wife went to Jamaica in 1774 and stayed for thirteen years. On his return to England he was sent as a debtor to Fleet prison.
