Poet and man of letters. Spender met W.H. Auden and other writers of Auden's circle at Oxford University before going to Berlin in 1930 and later to Spain, during the Civil War. He held many academic appointments in England and the USA and was editor (with Cyril Connolly) of Horizon (1939-41) and of Encounter (1953-66).
