Noted as a virtuoso dancer, Sleep joined The Royal Ballet in 1966. He was made a principal in 1973. For Ashton he created roles as Squirrel Nutkin in the film The Tales of Beatrix Potter (1971) and Kolia in A Month in the Country (1976). He formed his own dance company Dash in 1980 and choreographed The Hot Shoe Show for stage and television.
