by William Rothenstein

William Rothenstein chose to include Violet, then the Marchioness of Granby, in a portfolio of English Portraits, published in 1898, marking prominent individuals in British society. However, Rothenstein's style was not to Violet's liking and communication between them ceased. He noted, 'I was not surprised the drawing failed to please her - I never pretended to be able to draw beautiful women'.
