Hancock had featured on the radio in Variety Bandbox and Educating Archie before his own programme. Hancock's Half Hour, made it's debut in 1954, and made Hancock famous for his sardonic view of life. His gloomily disaster-prone character, was supported, among others, by Sid James and Kenneth Williams, was an instant success and greatly increased his popularity with the transfer to television in 1956.
