The son of a Dorset doctor, Tony Blackburn made his first public appearance with the Ian Ralfini Dance Orchestra at the Bournemouth Pavilion while at college. In 1964 he made his first radio appearance on Radio Caroline; he joined the pirate station Radio London two years later. When BBC Radio 1 commenced broadcasting in 1967, Blackburn presented the daily Breakfast Show and was the first disc jockey on the new network. He remained with Radio 1 until 1984.
