by Unknown artist
Smollett left England in 1768 or 1769 and died at the age of 50 at Monte Nero near Leghorn in 1771. The portrait is inscribed on the reverse as having been painted at Pisa. While the artist has not been identified and while not of the first rank he is clearly Italian. More detailed information on this portrait is available in a National Portrait Gallery collection catalogue, John Kerslake's Early Georgian Portraits (1977, out of print).
