by Liam Woon
Born in Shropshire, Oulton studied at St Martin's School of Art and the Royal College of Art. She painted impasto abstract works, using her fingers rather than brushes to manipulate the paint surface, creating a more visceral effect. She had her first solo exhibition at Gimpel Fils in 1984, followed by another solo show at Marlborough Fine Art in 1990. Oulton was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1987.
