King-Hall was the grandson, son and nephew of admirals, and a seafarer himself. Having been involved at Jutland on the Southampton, he served in various posts in the Navy until he was promoted commander in 1928 and was called to work on the naval staff. King-Hall wrote for the press under a pseudonym, publishing his first book, Western Civilization and the Far East (1924) under his own name.
