Mathematician and theoretical physicist. Hawking was Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University, a post famously held by Sir Isaac Newton. Aged twenty-one, he was diagnosed with a degenerative motor neurone disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Overcoming the severest physical disabilities (he spoke through an electronic voice synthesizer), he made revolutionary contributions to science through his early research on relativity which led him to study the Big Bang, the creation of the universe and black holes.
