by James Macardell, after Thomas Hudson

Hales was a clergyman and scientist whose discoveries inspired scientists throughout the 18th century. Elected to the Royal Society in 1718, he advanced knowledge in two main areas. Through his experiments on air flow he introduced ventilators to hospitals, prisons and ships. His work on animal and plant physiology, for instance the effects of the sun's rays on the sap of plants, increased understanding of food preservation.
