Waller, a zealous Puritan, opposed the Crown in the Long Parliament and during the Civil War held a chief command in the West Country until 1645. At the end of the interregnum he was imprisoned for three years and after his release lived for a time in poverty before turning his support towards the restoration of the monarchy.
