A rector's son, Pulteney's military career begun when he was commissioned into the Oxford Militia in 1878. He served with the Scot's Guards in the Anglo-Egyptian War and the Second Boer War, and between 1908 and 1914 he commanded troops in southern Ireland. In World War I, Pulteney commanded the 3rd corps of the British expeditionary forces.
