Russell, the son of a stonemason, began working in various jobs including a clerk in a soap factory and a sales assistant in a drapery store. In 1863, he was elected Secretary and Parliamentary Agent of the Irish temperance movement and became well known as a speaker. He used the post as a springboard to a full-time career in the movement, opening a successful temperance hotel in Dublin in 1870.
