An early admirer of his work, Henry Lamb provided Spencer with encouragement and patronage, giving him a room in his house at Poole in 1922 and 1923. The painting that established Spencer's reputation, The Resurrection, Cookham (1924-6, Tate collection), was painted in a studio in Hampstead borrowed from Lamb.
