Born in Bristol, Long graduated from St Martin's School of Art in 1968. His adoption of the landscape as his material/inspiration, has resulted in work based around walks and land-based sculpture. His concerns of time, movement and the environment are recorded through photographs, maps, words and material from the landscape brought into the gallery context. His first solo show was held at the Whitechapel in 1971, he represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1976, and won the Turner Prize in 1989.
