In 1820 Patrick Grant entered the Bengal Native Infantry in the service of the East India Company. In the 1830s and 1840s, he served as an officer in most of the major campaigns in China and India. By 1856, he had risen to the rank of Lieutenant-General and was placed in command of the Madras Army.
