Malcolm Arnold Robertson entered the civil service at the age of nineteen and was appointed a clerk upon the establishment of Her Majesty's Diplomatic Service in 1899. He rose through the ranks and in 1917 became first secretary of the British Embassy in Washington D.C. It was in the U.S. that he met and married Gladys Ingalis, daughter of railroad magnate Melville E. Ingalis. The couple had one son.
