Writer on trade, and one of the most substantial merchants of his day; when supplier of victuals to the navy impressed Pepys as 'a mighty understanding man'; forceful governor of the East India Company: his A New Discourse of Trade (1665) attracted great attention with its outspoken advocacy of the advantages of free trade; his acquired riches made him many enemies and he was criticised by John Evelyn as 'over growne and suddainly monied.'
