Originally from Kirby in Norfolk, the London merchant John Webster was living in Amsterdam by 1644. He also spent time at The Hague where he acted as commissary for the Russian Tsar. The exiled Charles II made various appeals to him for money and, after the Restoration, created him a baronet on 31 May 1660. He died in London and was buried in Westminster Abbey.
