Agriculturalist and first President of the Board of Agriculture, 1793; he initiated sheep-shearings, introduced improved methods of tillage and established new breeds of livestock in Scotland. His Statistical Account of Scotland, drawing on returns from every parish minister in Scotland, was published in 1799.
