Born James Steuart, he took the additional surname Denham when he succeeded to his father's title in 1780. He joined the army in 1761 and served in the Westphalian campaign of 1762. Posted to Ireland in 1769, he was appointed aide-de-camp to the Lord lieutenant, Lord Townshend. He was elected MP for Lanark county in 1784, a seat which he held for eighteen years.
