Sir Henry Wylie Norman entered the Indian army at the age of seventeen. He took part in the second Sikh campaign, after which he served in numerous frontier expeditions between 1850 and 1854, and in the suppression of the Sonthal rebellion of 1855-6. During the Indian Mutiny he was engaged in a number of actions including the siege of Delhi and the relief of Lucknow.
