Sir Henry Irving as Hamlet NPG D82

© National Portrait Gallery, London

by Harry Furniss

Irving's performance as Hamlet in 1874 confirmed his position as the leading figure of the British stage. The psychological acuity and realism of his performance defied theatrical tradition and became the benchmark for future generations. The importance of the performance was recognised immediately; the critic Clement Scott described the opening night as 'a turning point in the history of English dramatic art'.
