Sir George Howard Darwin was the second son of Charles Darwin. He was appointed Plumian Professor of Astronomy and Experimental Philosophy at Cambridge University in 1883. His principal work was on the subject of tides, on which he became the leading authority, and on other physical questions connected with the relation of the earth and moon. He won the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1892, and later served as the Society's president.
