Educated at University College, London. In 1850 he was articled to his father, James Graham Lewis of Lewis & Lewis, one of the best-known firms of solicitors in London. George was admitted as a solicitor in 1856 and was later made partner. He drew public attention to himself by his interrogation in the Charles Bravo poisoning case in 1876, and from that time was connected with many controversial criminal cases.
