The musician George Macfarren experienced difficulties with his eyesight from early childhood, influencing him in the choice of composing rather than performing music. A prolific composer who achieved celebrity for works such as the overture Chevy Chace (1836), Macfarren's career continued to flourish after the onset of blindness in the early 1860s, as aided by assistants, he carried on producing new works.
