Frederick Haldimand was born in Yverdon, Switzerland as François-Louis-Frédéric Haldimand. He spent his early military career (1740-56) in Europe, firstly in the Prussian Army, and then with the Swiss mercenaries. Haldimand was part of a group of foreign officers who transferred to the British army to provide an officer corps for a regiment recruited from the German and Swiss inhabitants of Pennsylvania.
