Burton presented this carte-de-visite to George Scharf, Director of the National Portrait Gallery, which he inscribed on the reverse 'To G.S with friendliest greetings from F.W.B, Sept 5th 1863'. Scharf had been friends with the artist and scholar since 1858, but after Burton's appointment as Director of the National Gallery in 1874, he became an increasingly important professional associate.
