This portrait of the colonial administrator, Sir Frank Swettenham, was painted in 1903 by the leading society portraitist of the time, the American artist John Singer Sargent. It was commissioned by the Malay Straits Association of London who oversaw the governance of a British colonial group of territories located in Southeast Asia.
