Clough Williams-Ellis is best remembered for creating the Italianate village of Portmeirion in North Wales. Having studied architecture for just a few months, he set up his own London architecture practice in 1904. In 1908, he inherited a country house in Meirionshire, Wales, which he spent the rest of his life embellishing and restoring.
