Born in Streatham, he settled in Dublin in 1911 and drew on the customs and legends of the west of Ireland to write stories and compose music. His music first came to notice when Sir Henry Wood conducted his orchestral tone poem In the Faery Hills at the 1910 Promenade Concerts. Friend to many republicans, he responded to the Easter Rising of 1916 with In Memoriam.
