This print shows a well-known local landowner on having been made President of the exclusive Caledonian Hunt. Hope liked to live the life of a country gentleman, enjoying traditional masculine pursuits rather than what he saw as effeminate modern pastimes. Surrounded by horses and hounds, he entertained generously and devoted himself to his estate, improving his lands and establishing extensive salt and coal works, from which he made his fortune.
