Browne was Master of the Horse and Standard-Bearer to Henry VIII, and became a friend to the King. He stood in for Henry at his proxy marriage with Anne of Cleves in 1540. During the King's final illness, it was Browne who told him of his approaching death. He was appointed guardian to Prince Edward (soon to be Edward VI) and to Princess Elizabeth (later Elizabeth I).
