Ordained in 1756, Barrinton was made Bishop of Llandaff in 1769 and Bishop of Salisbury in 1782. In 1791 he was appointed Bishop of Durham. He was a supporter of the 1788 Proclamation Society, which aimed to create a new moral tone in society. In 1796 he helped found the Society for Bettering the Condition and Improving the Comforts of the Poor.
