Lowe trained as a barrister, travelling to Australia in 1842 where he played an active role in politics until 1850. Returning to England he became lead writer for The Times, entering parliament two years later. He occupied posts in successive governments in the 1850s, distinguishing himself as a speaker in the Reform debates of 1866-7. He became Chancellor of the Exchequer (1868-73) and then Home Secretary (1873-4), during Gladstone's first administration. He was raised to the House of Lords as Viscount Sherbrooke in 1880.... more
