by Samuel Alexander Walker

Admitted to a Studentship (Fellowship) of Christ Church, Oxford, in 1846, Benson became, according to Bishop Hall, 'one of the greatest spiritual forces in the English church during the latter half of the nineteenth century'. Before coming to Oxford, he studied Roman Catholicism in Italy and in 1866 he founded a Church of England community, the Society of St John the Evangelist, at Cowley, where he had been vicar since 1850. Benson visited India and America, where he set up a branch of the Society.
