An only child, Grenville was educated at Eton and then briefly at Oxford where he fathered an illegitimate child. To keep him out of further trouble his father sent him on a grand tour. Under his father’s influence he became a politician and celebrated as a moderate reformer. In the 1830s, Grenville received compensation when slavery was abolished in the British Empire for a plantation he owned in Jamaica.
