Fitzpatrick entered Parliament in 1770. He was opposed to the American War of Independence but in 1777 was ordered to join his battalion in America. After his return Fitzpatrick became a leading figure in the Whig opposition. He was brother-in-law to radical politician Charles Fox and the two men became strong political allies.
