Prince Ranji, as he was popularly known was educated at Rajkumar College, Rajkot in India and at Trinity College, Cambridge where he first seriously took up cricket and received his 'Blue'. He joined the Sussex team in l895 and played for England against Australia, scoring eventually 24,000 runs in his first class cricket career (Punch dubbed him 'Run-Get-Sinjhi').
